Now you have to kind of establish a fit between your personality and the job attributes and you are ready with the answer. You might start like this: ‘Sir/ Madam, going by what I know about this position I think I am absolutely qualified to do this job’. If for example you have applied for a sales or business development position the answer could be: ‘Sir, I think I have got everything that it takes to be a good sales or BD person. I am goal oriented, I possess good communication skills, a pleasing personality, I am a team player and I have got complete product knowledge’. Remember these are nothing but what you mentioned in your strengths.

Taking it further you can mention something about your work experience; in case you have any and try to explain how that will help you earn business at your new job. By now you may already have certain questions in your mind. What happens to our resumes when we post them on an organisations internal server? Who reviews them? What are the kinds of skills people are attracted to, orthopedist

Next you should ensure that your resume is posted and stored in the company’s database. Often you receive a confirmatory mail. The other important thing to take care of is to write your resume in the ASCII format only, because most of the resumes lose their grace when they are converted to simpler format for storage. It is a good idea to write your resume in a notepad instead of MS word or some other application before you upload them for storage on a job portal server or an organisations internal server. However, when you send it by email on an ID you may use the MS word doc or still better a pdf.

What is the format then that a fresher should follow? There is no particular format I would say! A resume is to be customised depending upon the kind of job you are applying for. There are however some rules meant to be followed by the inexperienced. They are:

1. Objectivity: Let the resume be driven objectively. This means that only the relevant information is chosen and the irrelevant is dropped out. Remember, the aim is not to make you resume run into many pages but to ease the process of selection for the interviewer.

2. Truthfulness: Let not you be misguided by people on quoting wrong information and misleading the interviewer. This is your first move in the career and you can’t afford to take it wrong. The basis of any relationship is trust and nothing else.

With weaknesses on the other hand you list might appear like this: losing patience while meeting deadlines, being meticulous you need more time, communication skills, shy nature etc. with such a long list, you have to be very careful deciding your best match. Remember your answer to the previous questions can sprout the next array of questions; in that case be ready with your answers.

Along with these three important questions, one question that dries up the mouth and dampens the vocals of interviewee’s is ‘Why should we hire you?’ This is generally one last attempt made by the interviewer to dislodge you.

How do I answer it? Well, perhaps this is what might be going through your mind. The answer varies and it should; as I have been stressing earlier that an interview requires lot and lots of homework on your part, so a prior research into the company profile and the position you are applying for is very essential. One you are finished with this job, you must be having a list in your hand enumerating the various qualities, attributes and qualifications etc required for the position. Now you have to kind of establish a fit between your personality and the job attributes and you are ready with the answer. You might start like this: ‘Sir/ Madam, going by what I know about this position I think I am absolutely qualified to do this job’. If for example you have applied for a sales or business development position the answer could be: ‘Sir, I think I have got everything that it takes to be a good sales or BD person. I am goal oriented, I possess good communication skills, a pleasing personality, I am a team player and I have got complete product knowledge’. Remember these are nothing but what you mentioned in your strengths.

Taking it further you can mention something about your work experience; in case you have any and try to explain how that will help you earn business at your new job. Fresher’s in addition to strengths can talk about their academics. You may say, ‘I have specifically focused my post grad/ grad education upon becoming the best sales consultant’. Hold on; be aware that you shouldn’t contradict any of your earlier statements. Here talk about your papers/subjects that you completed and that are relevant to your current job.

One has to navigate the online application process faster in order to stay in race.

By now you may already have certain questions in your mind. What happens to our resumes when we post them on an organisations internal server? Who reviews them? What are the kinds of skills people are attracted to, orthopedist

Next you should ensure that your resume is posted and stored in the company’s database. Often you receive a confirmatory mail. If you don’t, it is a good idea then to call up the HR person in the organisation to confirm whether or not they have received your resume. If you are sending the resume by email, confirm by making a call. Many times some email filters mark mails with an attachment as a spam.

Make a list of relevant keywords and ensure that you use all of them in your resume, spaced evenly and not used more than twice; the latter is called keyword spamming and such resumes do not appear in the search results of recruiters.

Ensure that you are specific in mentioning your employment history and skills. Often we club together various competencies or skills to present ourselves as somebody who is jack of all trades. This doesn’t work anymore; increasingly organisations are looking for people who have got specific skills /expertise.

Finally, when you fill the online application form, the date it seeks is almost the same as you would present on your resume. Make it a point to include that information on your resume which is left out in the online application process.

Think and pen down all the keywords that come to your mind, those that are relevant to the job you are applying for. Let’s take an example of position requiring a management graduate with a specialisation in finance and a 5 years of experience in capital budgeting. The keywords for this position would be 5 years, management, MBA, graduate, finance and capital budgeting. I am just talking of the primary keywords. There may be many others like the location, language etc which may either be secondary or primary depending on how important they are for the job. In order to make your resume searchable you have to ensure that all of the six keywords find a place in your resume at least once and not more than twice so that it matches the search criterion and you are shortlisted.

The other important thing to take care of is to write your resume in the ASCII format only, because most of the resumes lose their grace when they are converted to simpler format for storage. It is a good idea to write your resume in a notepad instead of MS word or some other application before you upload them for storage on a job portal server or an organisations internal server. However, when you send it by email on an ID you may use the MS word doc or still better a pdf.

It is often a good idea to sit back and mull over your job objective before you begin writing or copying a resume. Pen down thoughts as they come to you and filter! Cohesion: We may often be successful in pulling together all kinds of information – relevant or irrelevant which results in the resume running into pages altogether. But does that solve the purpose.
